Video Script and Video

I wrote a video script for Old Spice Body Wash about how it improves every aspect of your life. I kept it in line with their silly advertisements and then recorded it. It was a successful 2-and-a-half-minute video. I had to learn how to be creative in both mediums and to be as effective as I can in that short amount of time.

Social Media Posts

I learned to research the different strengths and weaknesses of the different social media platforms and decide which platform would be optimal for my video. I chose Instagram and YouTube. I wanted to post on TikTok, but felt limited with the one-minute time restriction.

Press Release

I wrote a press release for the Utah Jazz on the story that involved the team falling to the fifth position in the NBA draft this year. I learned how to structure a press release to make it effective for media members.

News Article #1

I learned a lot about interviewing for the first news article we had to write. I had never interviewed someone before and learned how to thoughtfully consider questions as to elicit the best responses possible. I also learned how to as good follow-up questions. I wrote about the recidivism rate for inmates in Utah and interviewed the director for a halfway house that primarily houses former sex offenders. It was a very interesting experience.

News Article #2

I wrote an article on the effectiveness of college versus the cost. It was interesting learning more from someone who had experienced it and is now on the other side. (I’m obviously going through it now, so it was nice to get his perspective.) I interviewed an employee for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints about his experience going through college to become an architect.

Feature Article

I wrote a feature article about a marriage and family therapist. It was interesting to write in a way that is structured differently than a news article. It has a more drawn-out payoff in a feature article. Again, it was fun to hone my skills as an interviewer and learn how to ask effective questions.

Email Newsletter #1

I learned how to write an effective email newsletter and write catchy subject lines and first sentences in the email. It’s interesting to be on the opposite side, as I am usually the one deciding whether or not to open the email and read it. I had to consider what I would and wouldn’t open as a consumer and write it as effectively as possible.

Email Newsletter #2

I wrote another email for the same company, but had to focus on a different target audience. It was interesting to compare and contrast the different elements of both newsletters.
