1st Corinthians 10:13

I have always found the scripture 1 Corinthians 10:13 interesting. It says, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." I used to take comfort in this scripture and accept that it meant you would be able to get past all temptations that you face in life. But thinking deeper about it and experiencing life, I began to see people all around me succumb to temptations they couldn't bear. How many people do you know that are afflicted by some type of addiction? There are many. Where was their escape? Does this scripture apply to them?

I know we all have the light of Christ and some people (members) have the gift of the Holy Ghost. So basically, we all know when we are doing something wrong. I think we usually have some warning before we do something wrong. Is that our offer to escape? Perhaps it is and we are just not taking advantage of that escape. Obviously, there has to be a point in the process where we are intentionally doing something to go beyond the coverage of the protection in that promise. I heard a great lesson once by S. Michael Wilcox that illustrates this point. I will try to sum it up the best I can. He talked about how Christ told Peter he would deny him three times. Peter thought it was impossible. But what did Peter do? He followed Christ to Caiphus' palace and denied Him three times. He could have avoided the situation as to not be in a position to deny Him, but he enabled it by going there. How many times do we knowingly go where a sin we struggle with will be there to meet us?  More than we want to admit, I'm sure. So stay within the promise. Stay in a place where we have an escape.
